Summer League 2023 - Information

Summer is coming, which means the MUFA Summer League will soon begin! Are you ready for warm days, spirited competition and cool drinks at the Dane? Then make sure to sign up before May 15th to get your free jersey and disc!
.

What is the MUFA Summer League?

Our Summer Leagues are ultimate frisbee mixed gender team leagues played during the week. Teams play one or two times a week in a swiss-style league. There are no divisions, every team has a rating that goes up or down based on the outcome of each game and the rating of the team they played.

So every week, we match you with other teams near your skill level for fair and fun matches. With over 120 teams and over 2,500 players last season, people of all skill levels take part every summer.

Every team will get a 'beer card,' which will grant them two free pitchers of beer at a Great Dane around Madison and Fitchburg. Overall, Summer League is a great way to have fun, get outside, and have an excuse to see your friends or your soon-to-be-friends during the week.

When and where is the Summer League?

Location: All around the Madison area. Teams can select which side of town they prefer to play on, but we cannot guarantee they will have that side of town every game.

Time: 6pm or 7:30pm start time during the start of summer and games last for up to 90 minutes. During the late summer, schedules will be adjusted to start 15 minutes earlier, due to less daylight.

Days: What day(s) you play depends on the league you sign up for. You can play either once or twice a week. For options of days, read below.

What are the options to join a Summer League?

($60) Monday/Wednesday League - Create Team - Join Team
($60) Tuesday/Thursday League - Create Team - Join Team
These leagues play twice a week.

($45) One Day a Week (M or W) - Create Team - Join Team
Does two times a week feel like too much for your team’s busy schedule? This league participates in the M/W league (listed above) but only plays once a week on either Monday or Wednesday. Once registration closes, we'll move your team into the M/W league and only schedule you on your preferred day.

($60) Small Group Signup - Register
Don't have enough for a full team? No problem. Register in the small group signup! All you need is one or more other people, and we will join you with other groups to create a team for you to play on in the M/W Summer League.
Note: You must have at least half FMP (female-matching players) to be placed onto a team.

Looking for a Team/Players? Players and Teams can use the team/player finder pages to find a team to join or a player to join their team.
Players Looking for a Team: Players can post here, and teams can search it to find a player to contact to join their team.
Teams Looking for Player(s): Teams can post here, and players can search it to find a team that needs players to join their team.
If you're unable to find a team and it's getting close to May 29th, we suggest trying to grab a friend and sign up for the small group signup.

If you register after May 15th, you may be able to purchase a jersey from our shirt supplier at an extra cost, depending on what they have available.

Playoffs and Finals

When we get closer to playoffs, teams can opt-in to participate in the playoffs. Playoffs will be single elimination brackets of 4-8 teams of similar skill levels. Teams that lose their first playoff game can opt-in to a consolation bracket of 2-4 teams of similar skill who also lost their first game. This means that all teams can play at least 2 playoff games. We will post more details and any adjustments to this structure closer to the start of playoffs.

Unofficial Subs

Unofficial subs are not allowed unless you have the explicit permission of the opposing captain. In addition, that sub must be registered and paid on another Summer 2023 MUFA team. See MUFA Rulebook on the side panel for more information.

Ringer Limits

TR Swiss: 3 ringers of each gender on the roster, 2 of each gender on the field
MW Swiss: 2 ringers of each gender on the roster, 2 of each gender on the field.
("Ringers" are high-level players who meet certain criteria detailed in the MUFA rulebook. See MUFA Rulebook on the side panel for more information)

Forfeits/Spirit Violations/Player Shortage/Notifications

If teams need to forfeit a game, they are required to notify MUFA and their opponents in a timely manner. Teams that repeatedly forfeit or do not have enough players to field a team may be removed from future weeks of play or the playoffs. In addition, teams can be removed from the playoffs or even the league altogether for repeated poor gamesmanship or other conduct violations, in accordance with our Complaints Policy. See the MUFA rulebook for more detail. More information on specific forfeit policies for Summer League will be posted soon.

Welcome to Tuesday FMP Coached League!

Welcome to Tuesday FMP Coached League!

We are excited to work with you this season!  This email is a bit long, but hopefully it will answer some questions you may have.

Start date:  We will, hopefully, start Tuesday, April 11thTime is 6:00-7:30 every Tuesday night.  We will be playing at Manchester Park and will gather in the area around fields 1 and 2.

Spring in WI is known for its unpredictable and rainy weather, so there are bound to be some cancellations due to weather.  All cancellations decisions will be made no later than 4:00 pm on the day of play and you should get an email and you can always check www.mufa.org to see if games have been cancelled.

How the league is organized:  We will do an hour of skill development and then, play mini, other ultimate frisbee based games, or full field scrimmages/games.  We will wait until later in the season to play full field scrimmages/games because, over the years, we have learned it is easier (and more fun) to play with fewer people, on a smaller field, and get more touches on the disc.  This is where mini comes in.  It is super fun!

You have been assigned teams, but as you may have noticed, there is only one scheduled game listed.  We won't have a schedule of games because that isn't how the league works.  Don't worry, you will have a team and you will be playing!  There just won't be a schedule!

Meet the coaches:  There is a coach assigned to each team and I think they are labeled "coach" on the roster.  Follow this link to learn more about the coaches.

What to bring:

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable to run around in and may get dirty.
  • Dress for the weather and plan to be outside for 90 minutes
  • Water and snacks
  • Cleats are preferred, but running/tennis shoes work just fine.
  • A dark shirt and a white shirt so we can designate teams

What you get:  Excellent coaching, a frisbee, and two free pitchers of beer at the Great Dane after each session.

We may have some homework for you between sessions just to cover some information outside of clinic so we can focus on doing things versus always talking about things.  I will send that information out as needed.

We are SO looking forward to seeing y'all this week!

Mo Kappes (league director) and Tuesday coaches (too numerous to name!)

All Registration Closes  - April 4th 11:59pm
First Week of Games - April 10th - April 14th
Last Week of Games - May 29th - June 2nd

Let's talk about what leagues will have this year.

Female Matching Player (FMP) Leagues - Baggage Limit 4
All games run from 6-7:30 PM.

($25) Monday FMP: IM/Adv| Both sides of town
($25) Thursday FMP: Recreational  | East Side
($25) Tuesday FMP: Coached  | West Side (Manchester)
The coached league is designed to teach beginners the basic skills they need to play ultimate frisbee and provide intermediate players the opportunity to fine tune and develop new skills.  Returners are encouraged and welcome!  Expect to spend 1 hour learning and practicing skills using drills and the last 30 minutes scrimmaging.  As the season progresses, we will spend more and more time scrimmaging.  Our instructors are local elite female matching club players, so come learn from some local dedicated and skilled players!

Male Matching Player (MMP) Leagues - Baggage Limit 4
All games run from 6-7:30 PM.

($40) Monday/Wednesday MMP | Both sides of town
($25) Tuesday MMP | East Side
($25) Thursday MMP | West Side

Mixed Leagues - Baggage Limit 2
All games run from 6-7:30 PM.

($25) Thursday Mixed - Recreational  | Both sides of town
($25) Thursday Mixed - Adv. Draft  | Both sides of town
($25) Tuesday Mixed - Masters  | Mostly West Side
Masters league is not a reference to skill level but to age. This is open to Male Matching Players who will be 33 this year or are already older than 33. For Female Matching Players, you must be 30 this year or older 30.

Exact field locations will be dependent on the eventual size of each league. We will do our best to adhere to the predicted locations here but cannot guarantee there may not be an occasional crosstown game.

Agender, gender non-conforming (GNC), genderqueer, or gender fluid players are encouraged to join leagues and match up with the players that they feel most comfortable playing with and marking. The goal is to make all MUFA programs more welcoming and safe for all athletes.

Spring League Changes

1. Minimum Number of FMPs per team
One common complaint from female matching players is that the FMP roster sizes need to be larger and that, too often, there were not enough subs at the games for FMPs. For mixed leagues, our minimum number of FMPs was seven per team; we will increase this to eight. This may affect the total number of teams. Note that, while we will aim to meet this goal, it is possible that a few teams might have 7 FMP on it still, if there are registration issues.

2. Mixed League - Lottery Registration
In Fall League especially, but also in Spring League, we run into the issue of players overloading the website to try to register as fast as possible when registration opens. This not only creates a bad experience for the players, as the website can crash or have issues due to the significant increase in traffic, but also an unfair one for anyone who can't register exactly as registration opens.

This Spring League, we will try out a new lottery system for Mixed leagues only, where registration will open for about a week. All players will register to what is essentially one big waitlist. After the week of players signing up to this "waitlist," we will randomly select solo players or baggage pairs off of the waitlist, and they'll get access to finish their registration.

The total number of teams will be decided after registration closes based on the number of female matching players that register for the league. For male-matching players, the priority in the lottery will be MMPs who are baggaged with FMPs. We cannot guarantee that MMP/MMP baggages in mixed leagues will make it into the league.

If any spots are available after the lottery, we will open up registration for the remaining spots. Our goal is to create a more fair registration system and help us understand how many players are interested in playing. As often, players will not try to register to a full league, as they know they are unlikely to get in.

Keep in mind this is a new process for us, and if we run into issues in our testing prior to registration opening,  we may need to revert to using the standard registration process. If this happens, it will be communicated before registration opens.

3. Mixed Masters League
We plan to use the Spring League to try new formats for MUFA. In the survey, we asked about various formats MUFA could try, including an age-restricted league. This option was well received, and we will try it out this Spring. We will use the existing USAU Masters requirements, which are 33 for MMPs; 30 for FMPs.
